TÜRGEV ACADEMY 1st Student Symposium

The 1st Student Symposium of the TÜRGEV Academy Program (TAP) was held on Sunday, December 1, at SETA Istanbul.

The 1st Student Symposium of the TÜRGEV Academy Program (TAP)—which has become a second university for TÜRGEV students by providing them with academic-level education to gain competencies beyond their fields of specialization—was held on Sunday, December 1, at SETA Istanbul.

In this program, supported by expert academics in their respective fields, students received year-long instruction in the areas of Islamic Studies and Social Sciences, conducted research aligned with their interests, and successfully presented their papers at the symposium.

Following the opening remarks by Assoc. Prof. Mahmut Kelpetin, who addressed the audience and students by outlining the work of the Academy, TÜRGEV Chairwoman Dr. Fatmanur Altun also spoke about why TÜRGEV needed such an academy and how the Academy has contributed to the foundation’s mission.

The symposium consisted of two sessions. In the first session, chaired by Assoc. Prof. Hikmet Yaman, the following students presented their papers:

  • Beyza Nur Erol (Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakıf University): “The Role of the Sunnah in Understanding Islam and the Binding Nature of the Prophet’s Decisions”

  • Nurşen Yüksel (Istanbul Şehir University): “Maqasid al-Sharia”

  • Hatice Büşra Sarı (Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakıf University): “The Reflections of Caliph Umar’s Legal Judgements on the Present Day”

  • Merve Göktaş (Marmara University): “An Evaluation of Whether the Gate of Ijtihad is Closed”

  • Nurseda Dayı (Ibn Haldun University): “The Palestinian-Israeli Conflict in the City of Hebron”

In the second session, chaired by Assoc. Prof. Mahmut Kelpetin, students from Marmara University presented the following papers:

  • Rümeysa Küskü: “The Causes of Religious Reform Movements in the Context of the Reformation and Islamism”

  • Rüveyda Yaman: “The Changing Religious Understanding in the Late Ottoman Empire and the Example of Said Halim Pasha”

  • Zeynep Sevinç: “Charisma and Leadership: A Sociological Approach”

  • Mukadder Kalkan: “The Effects of Hunger and Satiety on Human Behavior”

At the end of the program, Dr. Fatmanur Altun asked the participating students questions about their work and future goals, offered academic advice, and presented them with their symposium participation certificates along with her best wishes for continued success.
