Our Chairwoman, Dr. Fatmanur Altun: “A Day of Shame in Our Democracy’s History”

Various events were organized to ensure that February 28, remembered as a dark stain in Türkiye’s democratic history, is not forgotten and that such tragedies are never repeated.

As part of these events, our Chairwoman Dr. Fatmanur Altun delivered a speech at the symposium titled “A Day of Shame in Our Democracy’s History,” organized in collaboration with the Eyüpsultan Municipality and SETA at the Eyüpsultan Cultural Center.

The first session of the symposium, which examined February 28 from different perspectives, was moderated by Zeliha Eliaçık, Expert on European Studies at SETA Foundation, and featured the following presentations:

  • Dr. Fatmanur Altun, Chairwoman of TÜRGEV, “February 28 as a Tool of Pro-Western Politics in Türkiye”

  • Ekrem Kızıltaş, President of the Media Association and columnist for Takvim newspaper, “A Media Coup”

  • Halime Kökçe, columnist for Star newspaper and opinion editor, “The Current State of the February 28 Trials”

  • Veysel Kurt, lecturer at Istanbul Medeniyet University, “February 28 and the Security Sector”

The second session, moderated by Nebi Miş, Director of Political Studies at SETA, included:

  • Meryem İlayda Atlas, Researcher at SETA and Publishing Coordinator of Daily Sabah, “How Do You Perceive February 28?”

  • Atilla Arkan, Director of Education and Social Policies at SETA, “The Impact of February 28 on Education”

  • Ali Aslan, Researcher on Society and Media at SETA, “February 28 Against National and Indigenous Politics”

  • Mevlüt Tatlıyer, Economic Researcher at SETA, “The Economy of February 28”
