The seventh session of the The Language of Witnessing: Gaza and Literacy program series, titled “Religious Literacy: Compassion, Justice, and Silence,” was held at the GİF Safveti Paşa Campus with the participation of esteemed academic Necdet Subaşı.
During this session, discussions focused on how religious discourses are instrumentalized in the specific context of Gaza, while also examining how religion can continue to carry and uphold its core principles such as compassion, justice, and solidarity. The concept of religious literacy was addressed not merely as a field of knowledge, but as a moral responsibility and a conscientious stance in the face of oppression and injustice.
Throughout the seminar, the responses and reflexes of the Islamic world toward Gaza were evaluated within this conceptual framework. The meanings of silence, discourse, and action were critically examined, creating a deep and reflective space for dialogue. Participants were given the opportunity to reconsider the transformative power of religious language and the responsibilities it entails.
