Cultural Literacy: The Culture, Resilience, and Memory of Gaza

During the event, it was emphasized that Gaza should not be viewed solely as a geography of war, but also as a civilizational space rooted in a deep cultural heritage, history, and resilience. Emine Çınar shared with participants the rich cultural legacy of Palestine and explained how this heritage has formed a language of resistance in the face of sieges and destruction.

Throughout the program, topics such as recognizing different cultures, developing empathy, and moving away from an orientalist perspective were discussed through the lens of cultural literacy. Participants had the opportunity to rethink how a people preserve their collective memory through Palestine’s art, literature, and everyday life practices.

The “Language of Witnessing: Gaza and Literacy” program series carried out by TÜRGEV will continue to offer young people the opportunity to evaluate contemporary issues through a cultural, moral, and humanitarian perspective.

The next session will take place on Saturday, 15 November, at Rami Library under the title “Visual Literacy: The Language of the Image and the Construction of Meaning in the Relationship of True Representation,” with the participation of Prof. Dr. Ali Büyükaslan.
